alternative definition
(from: Vilhelmsen, L. 1996.) the most prominent sclerite in the hymenopteran labium; it is divided into a ventral, median part and a pair of lateral arms. The ventral part is broad and troughlike. It lies ventrally to the bases of the labial palpi, sometimes surrounding them with a sclerotised dorsal process. The lateral arms arise on the proximal parts of the ventral trough. They extend dorsally, towards the distal hypopharynx, where they fuse with the hypopharyngeal rods. The lateral arms may be more or less sclerotised, the sclerotisation sometimes continuing into the proximal parts of the hypopharyngeal rods  by:Andy Deans

About
This glossary is a product of an ongoing effort to build an ontology of anatomical terms used by hymenopterists. The ontology is fully accessible and editable through the web, and interested parties are encouraged to get involved in its development. A preliminary overview of contributors and information on how to cite the Glossary is available.

Caveats
Although the database is continually updated the list of terms, definitions, and relationships is incomplete. If you find errors or omissions, or you would like to contribute (either as an editor or to submit a list of terms) please contact .
